亞歷山大盛宴是促成韓德爾從寫作義大利文歌劇轉型成神劇創作的關鍵之作。此劇是為了慶祝一七三六年的聖西西莉亞日而寫的，聖西西莉亞是守護音樂的聖徒，而此劇的原作就稱為「音樂的力量」。所以這是一齣歌頌音樂偉大的作品。此曲中依韓德爾時代的慣例，要加進三首協奏曲，所以本片最後也加了作品三第四號的大協奏曲。此曲的故事描述亞歷山大大帝和情婦泰旖思在波斯帝國首都舉行了一場盛宴，並喚來樂師提摩奏七弦琴高歌，亞歷山大大帝聞樂乃想起許多事，但最後他終於壓抑不住心中為死去的希臘將士的哀傷，而下令焚城。由於此劇非常成功，讓韓德爾發現英語神劇在倫敦的市場，而從此改以英語神劇作為主要創作管道，動用一群英國神劇歌唱家，韓德爾這份一九七八年現場演出時灌錄的實況錄音，從問世以來就一直被視為經典，因為在此錄音問世前，就連英國本地，都沒有此劇的完整錄音（美國有一份完整錄音），因此這是當時世上大部份地區首次見到此劇的完整錄音。■2009.10■
